I was very confused because it seemed like she did & then the scene changed to him at the little girl amanda’s house and him telling the mom his girlfriend was visiting her sister in the North Shore. Was he talking about a new girlfriend? or the same one he had before? If the same one, are they still together? It would be so sad for a tragedy like that to break them up.

Yes, but if you read the Dennis Lehane books series that feature Pat Kenzie and Angie they do get back together in a later book.
I thought it meant she was gone and never coming back…you know “gone, baby gone”…
They broke up
I think they broke up, and she was staying with her sister because they broke up.
I think that Patrick only told Amanda’s mother that his girlfriend Angie was visiting her sister so he wouldn’t have to admit the rather-hurtful-truth. The truth being that because of Amanda’s kidnapping caper, his girlfriend left him. His girlfriend was very adamant about the fact that Amanda would have been a happier and better cared for child if she had lived with the retired police officer (Morgan Freeman) and not Amanda’s mother. It was probably on the tip of Patrick’s tongue to tell the mother (before she went out for the evening with no scheduled babysitter) to try harder to shape up and prove to him that he had made the right decision in returning her child to her.
