The truth being that because of Amanda's kidnapping caper, his girlfriend left him. His girlfriend was very adamant about the fact that Amanda would have been a happier and better cared for child if she had lived with the retired police officer (Morgan Freeman) and not Amanda's mother. It was probably on the tip of Patrick's tongue to tell the mother (before she went out for the evening with no scheduled babysitter) to try harder to shape up and prove to him that he had made the right decision in returning her child to her.
